Thursday, March 15

Session Duration: 1 Hour
Session Description: At the end of 2016, there were over 500,000 people participating in the Registered Apprenticeship Program of the U.S. Department of Labor. Based on current predictions, the program is expected to reach 1 million apprentices by 2018. Apprentices serve in one of the 1,349 jobs approved for this program. Surprisingly, there were less than 10 apprentices related to the grape and wine industry because there were only 2 jobs approved by the DOL – Wine Maker (Vinous Liquor) and Celler (sic) Worker.
The Registered Apprenticeship program involves partnership among employers, e.g., the grape and wine industry (GWI), educational institutions, as well as federal and state agencies. Registered Apprenticeships involve a blend of on-job-learning (OJL) and related technical instruction (RTI) that address the specific needs of a company or industry sector. Based on results to date, benefits to the employee include increased productivity and employee retention. Benefits to the employee include salary and benefits while learning, increases in wages as skills increase, and completion leads to an industry-valued credential.
A panel of representatives from the GWI and government agencies and the Viticulture and Enology Science and Technology Alliance will provide an overview of the Registered Apprenticeship program, how to participate, and the potential sources of funds to defray some of the costs associated with the RTI.
Through the efforts of folks in Iowa, Michigan and Missouri, the doors are opening for many more current and future employees to acquire the knowledge, develop the skills, and gain the experience needed to become productive contributors to the continuing growth of the grape and wine industry.
